For visitors Staying a few days there is a great variety of things to see and do in Dumfries and Galloway. The area is ideal with many quiet country routes to explore. It has some of Scotland’s best natural scenery and is famous for its lovely historic old houses and wonderful gardens. It is also one of the mildest parts of Scotland.Glasgow and Edinburgh are only one and a half hours by car or train, and we are equally convenient for visiting the Borders District or for day trips over the border to visit Carlisle, Hadrians Wall and the Lake District.
For Children there is quadbike riding nearby and Drumlanrig Castle with interesting things to see and do for all ages. And the Galloway Forest park is only a short drive away.
Walkers and Cyclists
For Walkers, a brochure and maps with local walks are available from the hotel and more serious walkers can choose from hill walking in the hills above Moffat and around Wanlockhead (the highest village in Scotland) or forest walks in the New Galloway Forest Park, The Forest of Ae and Mabie Forest. The eastern arm of the Annandale Way takes in the Lockerbie Wildlife Trusts Eskrigg Nature Reserve which is very close to the hotel and is also ideal for short walks and dog walking.
For long distance walkers and cyclists we are close to the B7079 used as part of the Lands End to John a Groats route. and we have indoor storage for bikes and drying facilities.
Fisherman are also well catered for. Permits are available from local estates for trout and salmon fishing on the river Annan. These can be delivered to the hotel for collection on arrival. There is also loch fishing at Moffat and Lochmaben.
An information folder and map is available for all our guests in your room on arrival. If you have a specific interest our Tourist Board will happily send you guides on any of the following – Birdwatching, Cycling, Fishing, Field Sports, Gardens, Golfing, and Walking. They will also send you a Visitors Guide with opening times and entry costs for the various attractions.
We are ideally situated only 5 minutes from Lockerbie and Lochmaben courses and there are a number of other courses both parkland and links within 28 miles. Prices range from £20.00 to £40.00 for a ticket depending whether you wish to play midweek or a weekend, some will offer a reduction for one game only if this is booked in the afternoon.
If you want more information on the courses give my golfing husband Norman a ring. If you give us dates, preferred courses, and whether you wish to play one or two rounds per day, I will phone to check availability and book tee times and lunches at any of the local courses for groups. A phone contact is preferable for this to confirm arrangements, as some courses will only hold provisional bookings for a short period.
For groups of four or less it is often possible to book the day before or play without pre-booking on weekdays.
Dumfries and Galloway Tourist Board offer Gateway to Golf Passes at a choice of 30 courses. Cost depends on the number of rounds and whether you wish to play mid-week or weekends. If this is of interest please call them direct on 01387 253862 for details and to arrange before you visit.
